This essay deals with a comparative history on the military use of dogs, especially German Shepherds, by East- and West German border patrols in Berlin and the inner-German border from 1961–1989. As much as 34 dogs were killed during the cold war, with casualities on both sides. Evidence is given for a pattern of continuity in the case of the East German NVA: both German dictatorships used dogs to project violence on their population.
